The United Nations (UN) Suriname, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation (BIBIS) and the Board of Anton De Kom University Suriname (AdeKUS), launched the SDG Butterfly Effect Mural at the AdeKUS campus. 

This mural, artistically crafted by local artist Fabian de Ramdanie, uses the motif of butterfly wings to incorporate illustrations of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The vibrant artwork is designed to resonate with the people of Suriname, making the SDGs more accessible and recognizable. 

During the official unveiling, UN Resident Coordinator Marina Walter, Minister of BIBIS Albert Ramdin, and AdeKUS Board Chairman celebrated the mural’s role in promoting the SDGs. The mural not only beautifies the campus but also serves as an educational tool, encouraging students and visitors to engage with the goals. 

One significant outcome of this partnership is the integration of the SDGs into the university curriculum. For instance, students in the Treaty Law, LL.B course at the Faculty of Legal Sciences created video presentations on treaties affecting the SDGs in Suriname, enhancing their understanding and commitment to these global goals. 

The influence of this artistic initiative will extend beyond the university. The UN in Suriname plans to inspire sustainability efforts by placing similar murals throughout the country, fostering a nationwide movement towards achieving the SDGs. This initiative underscores the belief that through unity and collaboration, we can ensure no one is left behind in our pursuit of a sustainable future.
