MY World Survey volunteer ceremony

During the MY World Global Week of Action (May 5-11, 2014) the adolescent and youth organization Yuwalaya coordinated with the UN Resident Coordinator Office of Nepal and various other youth organizations and schools to raise awareness and votes in Nepal. Through their joint efforts, they were able to collect more than 15,000 votes – doubling the amount from the previous year.

Yuwalaya coordinated with more than 50 youths from various colleges and youth clubs of Kathmandu to do the survey. The volunteers were honored by the United Nations Nepal Resident Coordinator’s Office at the UN House in Lalitpur on Tuesday, 17 June for their contribution to the survey.

During the certificate ceremony, the UN Resident Coordinator for Nepal, Mr. Jamie McGoldrick said, “we always rush and are occupied with hearing from adults and older people; but to build the nation we need to hear from youth seriously, and we are quite serious about it.”

The My World Volunteers had the opportunity to discuss their experiences in gathering people’s votes and also to talk about youth issues and opportunities in the UN with UN personnel on that day.

Half of the votes were collected from youth aged 16-30. More than 1/3 of the Nepali votes came from people aged 15 and under, compared to only around 10% globally. The top three priorities thus far are “A good education,” “Better job opportunities” and “Better Healthcare.” These are followed by “Equality between men and women” which is strikingly high in comparison to global results, where it is eighth.Annex 2_MY World NEPAL priorities
